Iancu Oteteleșanu, a notably influential personality of the early 19th century, was a leading political figure, aristocrat, and benefactor recognized for his significant cultural and educational impacts in Wallachia. Born in 1795 into a boyar lineage in Craiova, Oteteleșanu was actively engaged in politics and championed the modernization of Romanian institutions. He was an advocate for reform, promoting cultural and educational progress, particularly emphasizing education for women.
One of his notable legacies is his generous bequest of a large portion of his fortune to the Romanian Academy to create an educational establishment for girls, which resulted in the establishment of the “Ioan Oteteleșanu” Institute for Girls. However, this donation sparked considerable controversy following his passing. Constantin Argetoianu, a relative of Oteteleșanu, recounted the conflicts surrounding this inheritance in his writings.
The bequest, which faced opposition from Oteteleșanu’s nephews and other family members, was contested in court but ultimately upheld. The last will stipulated that any contestation would result in the entire inheritance transferring to Ioan Kalinderu, the president of the Romanian Academy and manager of the Royal Domains. In spite of the legal challenges, the Romanian Academy successfully preserved the bequest and utilized it to create a school for underprivileged girls, with Ioan Slavici designated as the founding director.
