Astăzi se sărbătoresc 155 de ani de la nașterea unui renumit istoric și autor român.

On 5 June 1871, Nicolae Iorga, an eminent Romanian historian and politician, was born in Botoşani. Iorga held the position of Romania’s Prime Minister from April 1931 to June 1932. As the offspring of a lawyer, he was self-taught in reading and made his first appearance at the age of 14 in the newspaper “Românul,” which was owned by his uncle, Manole Arghiropol, in 1885. He attended primary school and gymnasium in Botoşani, subsequently enrolling in the “Liceul Naţional” in Iaşi, where he graduated high school in 1888.

Iorga completed his higher education in just one year, finishing the Faculty of History and Literature in Iaşi with magna cum laude in 1889. He then sought further specialization at the universities of Paris, Berlin, and Leipzig. In 1892, he finished his studies at the “Ecole practique des hautes Etudes” and earned his doctorate in Leipzig by 1893.

Tragically, on the morning of 27 November 1940, Iorga was murdered near the commune of Strejnic by a legionary “death squad.” In addition to his historical and political achievements, Nicolae Iorga continues to be a key figure in Romanian intellectual history.
