BlackBerry has reliably rolled out distinctive smartphones, and the fresh BlackBerry Passport continues this legacy with its square screen. While this format brings benefits, it also introduces certain drawbacks. It won’t fit in your back pocket and isn’t usable with just one hand. Nonetheless, the BlackBerry Passport serves as a genuine pocket computer, tailored specifically for professionals with premium specifications and an eye-catching design.

Design

The BlackBerry Passport is made from durable materials and is constructed on an aluminum frame that nearly envelops the entire side area of the device. The back cover is resistant to scratches and has an appealing finish.

Measuring 128 x 90.3 mm, the BlackBerry Passport is not exactly petite. Its width is considerable, possibly surpassing any other smartphone currently available.

While the smartphone market has moved in a different direction, BlackBerry has stayed true to its signature feature. It maintains the same expansive screen and the familiar physical QWERTY keyboard positioned beneath the display. The screen is safeguarded by Gorilla Glass 3, which has become a staple for quality phones.

The BlackBerry Passport has a thickness of 9.3 mm and weighs 196 g, making its presence noticeable in your pocket.

The Passport stands out as an unconventional, pioneering smartphone, characterized by sharp and bold lines.

Display and Keyboard

Featuring a 4.5-inch screen and a square configuration, rotation of the screen is unnecessary. If you frequently read on a smartphone, this display is perfect. No need to zoom or scroll sideways, as it is ample enough to accommodate around 60 characters in one line.

The resolution of the screen stands at 1440 x 1440 with 453 ppi, and an IPS panel that guarantees excellent visibility from various angles.

The QWERTY keyboard emerges on the screen when a text editing app is opened, showcasing four additional rows of keys. This keyboard features a touchpad that spans the entire surface, enhancing web browsing or reading experiences.

CPU, GPU & Memory

The BlackBerry Passport can easily rival the most potent Android smartphones in hardware capabilities. It boasts robust specifications, with a Quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.26 GHz and an Adreno 330 GPU. It is equipped with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, extendable via a microSD card up to 128GB.

Its hardware also includes FM radio, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, proximity sensors, accelerometer, gyroscope, and a compass.

Camera

The 13 MP camera delivers high-quality images at a maximum resolution of 4128 x 3096 pixels. It includes autofocus, optical image stabilization, and an LED flash.

While the optical stabilizer is advantageous, the camera’s autofocus is somewhat sluggish (approximately 3 seconds). It is well-suited for landscape photographs but struggles with capturing moving subjects clearly.

The front camera offers only 2MP, which is adequate for
